I went to see "experts" on two separate occassions. I quoted that because one of them was this weird spiritual woman who based her therapy on some kinda book that I highly doubt had any scientific background. Also she told me I had to start dressing and behaving like an adult just because I was always riding my skateboard and wore jeans with some strips. What the fuck. Aren't they supposed to encourage me to be who a I am instead of censoring me? This was when I was about to start college and I never came back after that one session. Didn't help me at all However, when I was nearing the last year of high school, a teacher introduced me to a woman who was actually an expert on speech impedements and the like. And boy did she help me. I don't think it was the therapy so much as her attitude. We mostly did relaxation exercises, controlled breathing and reading. She also showed me some ways to avoid stuttering and blocking myself without actually overcoming the stutter. Just kinda controlling it. What I think helped me the most was that she was always so positive and caring, made me realise I wasn't the shit I thought myself to be. She taught me not to give a fuck when it isn't really necessary to give a fuck. It really depends on the person and their way to carry out the therapy. Of course it may be also helpful to find a community that does regular meetings to just talk and practice and share experiences. I never did that myself because I don't think I can find that in my area, but I think it should help you overcome fear of speaking in front of people, which is a major factor. As an example, I've had various presentation assignments throughout my degree annd I never backed off from them. I was afraid of course, but I actually manned up and did them. I even did a voluntary presentation. I don't think I stuttered once in any of them. In this cases my technique was to fake calmness even though I was nervous as fuck. "fake it til you make it", they say. Anyway, that's my case. You need to try and practice and find your own tricks and techniques. Don't overthink it, you are like this and if you get blocked or something once in a while, don't worry so much. It happens all the time to everyone, not just stutterers. Sorry for the text wall lol.
