Potential interesting cause of stuttering! Hi everyone, So I've had a stutter all of my life but has gotten much better. I still have stuttering but it's more of a speech block where I know exactly what word I want to say, position my mouth in the most optimal position to say it but for a couple gut-wrentching seconds, no sound comes out. Only after I have endured the burden of my words do they agree to exit. When I was applying for medical school, I had an interview with the school dean, who happened to be a psychiatrist that did a lot of work on stuttering (http://news.uci.edu/feature/giving-voice-to-those-who-stutter/). We talked about my stuttering and through the interview, he asked if my parents stuttered to which I said no. Then he references a condition, cutely named PANDAS: Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections. There is a hypothesis in which early exposure to streptococcal infections (think strep throat) leads to generation of antibodies against the bacteria that happen to have a tendency to cross-react with a part of the brain. I had never heard about this before and growing up, my family lived next to a dumping ground and I got sore throats constantly. PANDAS can be linked to a variety of childhood psychiatric diseases, with stuttering being one of them. I just thought it would be interesting to share this knowledge. There is not hard evidence for this phenomenon just yet but there have been some studies that have shown a possible correlation. Your friend, ds_life
