When I was young and still in primary school (think 1st/2nd grade) I had some speech therapy to get rid of the worst of it. However, I didn't really like it and found it counter intuitive. To me sitting with a therapist didn't overcome my stutter because much of my stutter came from speaking with strangers and/or in public so being able to speak with a therapist in a closed session was not a big deal. I started acting in plays beginning in third grade to really work on my stutter and from there I kept at it and now I'm doing great. Most people comment that they don't realize I have a stutter at all and to be honest it comes out infrequently at this point or I have been able to adapt and hide it (the usual avoiding certain words or feeling a stutter come on and changing my words or just pausing to work on it). I have gotten farther by working on my own and putting myself out there, but I did use a therapist when I was very young for some of the groundwork so to speak.
