I didn't start stuttering until I was 13, just before I started high school. From the first time it happened through the beginning of grade 9, it just got worse but I managed to work around/hide it through first semester. I started with a speech therapist at the beginning of second semester, and she recommended that exceptions be made in class for me. She wrote a letter to each of my teachers. One of them "didn't believe" me. She wrote a very strongly worded letter when I told her about it, and he changed his attitude. The request was basically not to ask me to read or answer questions unless I offered to. Since the stutter was new to me, I feel this was the best option. (This was only for grade 9, second semester, and nothing was put on my student record. In subsequent years, I would tell the teacher myself or not say anything and just participate like a "normal" student).
