I'm somewhat apprehensive about this, but I'm going to Martinique to live with a host family in about 8 months. So, I'm a lifelong, somewhat severe stutterer. I'm 20 and in college. I've taken French and Spanish before, and for whatever reason, it gets worse when I'm speaking foreign languages. I'm doing something called WWOOF (which is an organization providing room and board for people who volunteer to work on organic farms around the world) in Martinique, which is part of France that's in the Caribbean. I'm trying to build up my French again so that I can communicate with people other than my host family, but I'm really worried. I know that for whatever reason, unlike most English speakers I've met, most foreign-language speakers can't understand that I'm stuttering unless I spell it out for them. This has led to some awkward experiences in the past (I'm living in Miami and a good portion of the population only knows Spanish) which I'd like to avoid if possible. Has anyone else done something like this before? To be honest, my first choice was China, but after hearing about their cultural attitudes towards stuttering, I decided against it. I'd like to visit, but living with a host family sounds like a bad idea.
