Because they are desperate to believe they can pull their fluency up by their bootstraps. And normally I'd be fine with people believing whatever they need to as a nod to self-care, but I'm uncomfortable with them implying their peers have control over what's proven by *actual science* to be a physiological defect. Just rustles my jimmies.
