I’d argue this technique is effective when paired with other methods like a disclosure statement. For me, voluntarily stuttering was just super awkward. Not in a “oh gosh, I look silly/off.”, but in a “This stutter sounds fake to me” kind of way. IMHO, disclosure statements helped me get comfortable with my stutter way quicker. A simple, “Hey! I have a stutter so it may take me a moment to [insert action here].” did wonders. Helped me get the awkward reactions out of the way before they begin and let me recognize that everyone is more than happy to work with me if I’m honest and confident about it.
