I see it like there are three main groups -- your floor, your major, and your student group. I think it's important to find some kind of extracurricular group. And then find a friend or two or three in each of those groups to lean on and hang out with. I think they are equally important to having a good balance while at school. I didn't have solid friends in my major, and it cost me a lot. I really struggled academically but did make it through. The other two groups were covered well. The problem you will face is being hesitant to talk to new people or ask questions. And that's fine ... as long as you can have some close friends to talk to -- and ask them instead. It's so easy to just build walls and be on your own, but it'll end up making everything a lot harder in the long run.
