Yes it helped me a great deal get more fluent when I was younger. And I still do it when I have rough days. It helps me to reinforce the “fluent” part of my brain. Do you stutter when you say a single word that’s not a part of a sentence? What helped me when I was younger was to read by covering up all but the word I was reading (you can cut a hole out of paper) or using my finger to follow the words as I got better. I used to not be able to read fluently when alone but I can now. If you can’t be fluent by yourself you’re probably not going to be fluent around others so I think you should start with working on fluent reading when alone.
