When I talk to someome (especially girls, I'm a guy) and got stuck, I just take a break, give him/her an excusing look, look them directly in the eyes and smile. That seems to get nearly everyone; I never ever got a bad response on my stutter. Instead, my confidence (which in my case is huge, you got to have some ego to handle this) grows every time this works.
