Yes, even though as a kid I also played sports and spent time with friends a lot. Mostly because I used to stutter less, or give less of a crap, when I was younger. But basically for the same reason as you: in writing I can say exactly what I want, with the actual words I want. I don't have to change what I _want_ to say depending on what I _can_ say. It's the most freedom I ever had in life. Though I'm trying to develop the same attitude in real life now.
