New onset stuttering age 55, bipolar medication related Tardive dyskinesia??? This is long but the first paragraph sums up the essential information, read the rest if you want the in-depth details: I am 55F who never stuttered before but developed significant stuttering during the past 3-4 months. Dr and pharmacist think it’s medication related but exact medication is not definitively known and it’s not getting better after reducing or stopping them. I was diagnosed with bipolar 1 disorder 6 years ago and apparently many of the drugs used to treat it can cause this; presumably it’s a form of Tardive dyskinesia, an abnormal movement disorder) Suspected drugs for me include olanzapine, oxcarbazepine and gabapentin. I’ve been gradually taken off of these medications but I’m not better. Meanwhile I’m confused, embarrassed and scared for how it will affect my future. Nobody warned me this stuttering could develop or that only 50% get better. I’m having to wait 6-12 months for referral to a specialist. Very scary and frustrating to me. Anyone have help, advice, similar experiences?
