I read a lot of stories where parents didn't take it seriously. On the other hand, my parents took it way too seriously which has ended up backfiring. The root of my stuttering is my cerebral palsy, so it has to do with a mild brain injury that happened before I was born. But the doctor said I could work on the stutter and eventually grow out of it. So I have been in several speech therapies all my life, and my parents were very insistent and determined to make it disappear. So much that they unknowingly created this big deal around it, and stigmatized it to the point I gave up therapy in my mid teens. It got too overwhelming. And my parents had the best intentions for sure but I wish they had accepted and embraced it just as much as they tried to treat it, you know? So don't dismiss it, of course. But don't make it such a big deal either. Treat it and help your kid, but don't remind him to do what they've learned in speech therapy every time they open their mouth and have a blocking because trust me that's counterproductive.
