Does anyone else have an almost OCD-like issue with breathing that may impact their stutter? My father (non-biological) stutters, so that's certainly where I picked it up as a child. However, I do remember very vividly being almost disturbed by hearing people breathe while they speak as a very young child, and I still have the same issue to this day. When fluent people speak, they say a fragment of their sentence, and then unconsciously take an audible breath before moving on to the next part. It sounds like they're gasping for air. Whenever I hear this, especially as a child, it freaks me out and sort of disgusts me. I can't really explain it. As a stutterer, when I speak, I don't do this. I consciously try to as an adult, because I realize it's essential for speech, but it's like I just don't understand how to speak, or can't get past this psychological issue of breathing during speech. I've gone as far as to Google/YouTube "how to speak," but of course it's such a basic human skill for 99% of people that there are no results -- it just autocompletes to "how to speak (language)." When I attempt to speak, I feel like a parrot who is mimicking sounds, as opposed to a normal human using their built-in speech function. I'm just wondering if anyone else has this issue with hearing breath while others speak, and if perhaps you feel its impacted your speech at all.
