Almost no one can use “take a deep breath” in a moment of fear effectively. The scientifically sound practice is to start talking on a regular exhale and let your lungs modulate air pressure as you talk. Also, beginning slowly while exhaling while making eye contact will address the root causes. Those habits erased decades of blocking, and the results only get better over time.
