I can't really remember details. Basically whenever I had something to say but felt too timid to do so, I would decide to say it anyway. It might have started with small things like asking a supermarket worker where the spices are, then building up to telling a boss that his ideas are toxic, unfair, and are pissing people off. Every time I chose to be assertive the less nervous and more confident I became.
