My son who is 15 now, started stuttering at 4. He received speech therapy until 1st grade and we stopped because he was doing so well. Fast forward to middle school (6th) it came back. We had him evaluated, and he was able to get an IEP for speech again and yesterday 9th grade we had our annual IEP meeting and we all decided he’s doing so so well we will be graduating out of speech however, we will get him a 504 so if he needs help in the future at all while in Highschool he can go meet with speech for light help and we can see if he needs more. We will write that all into his 504. For him speech has been such an amazing help. He’s been given tons of “ tools” to help him when dealing with dis fluency. I’m so grateful he got in early right when he needed it. I really think speech was especially helpful when older because he remembers to use the tricks he’s been taught to help himself. I say to anyone who has a stutter definitely get speech therapy.
