Causes of Stuttering I feel like I'm seeing a lot of misinformation on here about the cause and probable outcome of stuttering. Stuttering is not a psychological problem. While stuttering can cause psychological distress, psychological problems do not cause stuttering. Stuttering is thought to be caused by a variety of interacting factors; neurological differences, such as differences in motor planning and processing of auditory feedback, and/or genetics. Anxiety and stress can increase stuttering, but it DOES NOT cause it. There is no cure for stuttering. While 5% of people have stuttered in their lifetime, only 1% of people remain to do so in adulthood (lucky us!) and they are mostly males. Why is that? Researchers are working on it, but the most simple and broad answer would be that their brains managed to self-correct the problem. While there is no cure, there are ways to improve your speech; but the stuttering is still there. Just throwing some information out there! Personally, when I realized that stuttering wasn't my fault and there was no cure, I felt a big weight off my shoulders. It's not because I didn't try hard enough in speech therapy; it's because my brain is different. And that's fine!
