Not super experienced with medication for stuttering. I have a Xanax prescription for anxiety, but only take it when I am really getting out of my comfort zone. I wouldn’t ever recommend taking a drug like Xanax though, daily. Maybe if you take SSRIs it may help correct your thinking a bit. But ultimately recommend personality development, embarrassment therapy, finding your goals and pursuing them, working out, challenging yourself to dress better than the average person, etc. Then get a therapist (recommend Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and use them to correct your negative thinking patterns. Lack of self-worth is a breeding ground for increased stuttering. Because then the thought of stuttering triggers you and makes you feel more different from others than you already feel. And when you say it’s part of you that wants to crawl out of you, I think that feeling is your suppressed personality and expression. It’s building up because you’re holding yourself back from being yourself. I feel that tightness too sometimes. So I would really recommend the Dave McGuire course. They have an inexpensive self help book on Amazon called “Beyond Stammering: The Mcguire Program for getting good at the Sport of Speaking.” You can have the book downloaded onto your phone in minutes if you get the Amazon Kindle app. The book will go through psychological reasons for stuttering, give you a breathing technique, and inspire you to get out and practice speaking. The program will be fear inducing but use the people closest to you for support. Keep practicing the techniques and follow what the book says. Then I recommend reading “Redefining Stuttering” by John Harrison, someone who stuttered for many years and was part of the National Stuttering Association for many years. You can find a free link to the book if you google the title. If you can’t find it I will help send you a link. I was surprised to find the book for free after seeing it was sold out on Amazon. The YouTube channel “Stuttering mind” really will help build your Confidence, and Rama is funny and very helpful. He’s confident like a boss! Then “Stuttering with Olga” is also a great channel. Both of these YouTubers do online coaching, so check them out!
