PET and fMRI scans have shown hyperactivity in the dopaminergic system in the stuttering brain compared to a non stutterers brain. That’s why dopamine blocking meds improve fluency for some. There are subsets of stutterers who have a lower dopamine baseline (similar to ADHD), where dopamine increasing meds improves their fluency.
