There's a lot of naysayers on this sub that deduce that everything must be backed my science to render true. The point I want to raise is, if stuttering really is a neurological impediment, why is it that most stutters are fluent when they speak to themselves, certain people, sing, or talk with accents/different tones. IF we have the potential and capacity to speak fluently, ***what is it that triggers*** our stutter when in public/social speaking situations. If it was truly neurological, you would stutter all the time. (Also, I am fully aware that stuttering can manifest from a physical cause and I am not speaking for this case). My personal belief from my own experience is that my stuttering has been caused by anxiety-driven and irregular breathing patterns. I think my brain associates most speaking situations as a threat and goes to auto-pilot from which I begin shallow breathing, tighten my jaw and my tongue is unable to flow freely to form the shape of certain sounds. The days when I am fluent and the periods (weeks, months) is usually when I feel like I have no breathing restrictions and my brain does not automatically screw up the system. I am teaching myself how to become more fluent and the ***best advice*** I can offer is for a stutterer to expose themselves to more speaking situations to desensitize yourself from the fear of speaking.
