Idk if this counts but I was probably like 21-22 and I worked at subway at the time (also a woman). This disabled guy came in during the lunch rush, and I’m typically very kind (on shift and off) so I opened the door for him, greeted him, and everything. Little background: if you have a hard time with W, don’t work at subway. I asked him white or wheat, whole or half and kept getting stuck on the Ws. At first he kinda chuckled to himself, the usual. We went on. What kind of meat, what kind of cheese, so on and so on. Then he just started laughing, mocking me, and trying to elbow the guy behind him thinking he was hilarious. I was by myself at the time, and I was already not having the best day so I looked him dead in the eyes and said, “Sir, I got into a car accident as a child and my head went through the windshield and glass went into my head. I now stutter as a result. Here’s your change, have a nice day.” (None of which is true. I’ve had a stutter since age 5, no trauma involved) And put the money on the counter. He sat there mouth open, NOW ALSO STUTTERING and wheeled his way out. I got lots of tips and asking if I was okay. It was hella embarrassing, but it was the first time I ever made someone feel as uncomfortable and awkward as they made me feel for something I can’t help.
