What do you think causes the severity of a stutter?

What do you think causes the severity of a stutter? What is your opinion on the cause of the severity? Stuttering itself is mostly genetic, but the severity mostly isn’t, I’ve heard. If the severity is not genetic, what do you think causes the severity (mild, moderate, severe)? Do you think it is mostly stress and environmental factors? Or what else do you think might cause it?
