I'm a recent Master's graduate, have stuttered since childhood and still do sometimes. I gave a bunch of interviews in the past couple of months. Primary advice, there is no need to tell them that you stutter or are a recovering stutterer. None of their business. You should not be worried about it being a waste of their time. My advice is 1. Stop feeling that you're any less adequate for the position because you have a stutter. It doesn't matter in most situations, and in situations that it does, you'll falter the first few times and get up and learn from it. 2. For phone interviews, I write down answers to standard questions I might be asked. I write these down on a google doc or something and read it out when they ask me the questions. This helps in two ways: One, giving a long answer cogently is difficult for people with even normal speaking ability, so reading it out helps you to put together a good story, and makes you sound articulate and prepared. This matters in a phone interview more than in a face-to-face interview. Two, this will relieve you of the stress of preparing these answers again for the next interview you give on the phone with a different company. Everyone stutters in a job interview. Believe it or not. Just don't let the thought creep in that you are any less fit for the job. During the interview, maintain eye contact, take pauses to breathe, talk slowly and loudly. This matters a lot, your head needs to hear you talk slowly and loudly, it gives you a positive feedback. You'll be fine. Although you'll have to take my word for it, I recently gave a 9-round interview at the company which makes the iThis, iThat products (won't explicitly name it) for an engineering position. I stammered. In one of the interviews (meant to be stressful), the hiring manager told me that he likes me, but is not going to let me through to the next round if I don't promise him that i wouldn't stammer in front of the vice president when he interviews me. I was borderline angry at this comment. I told him that I will not make promises on that premise and that I can do my best. He liked my answer I guess. Then 9 rounds and 2 weeks later, they made me an offer. Edit: spellings
