At around 36 I jumped in and forced my stutter to go away. Within 2 years my stutter was really minimal. Looking back it would have actually been faster if I did it in small incremental steps. I feel you man. My daughter would have loved me to be involved in her activities more but I didn't. I gave alot of money and volunteer time to her extracurricular stuff but was never in a leadership role. Totally regret it now.
