I dyed my hair pink and started wearing earrings to help alleviate my stuttering Hi, I’m a 20-year-old male, and I want to share my success story. A year ago, I realized that my stutter worsened because I cared too much about what others thought of me. My mind raced as if I were in the Olympics every time I was about to speak to someone. I tried so hard to be ‘normal.’ Then, it dawned on me that I don’t need others to be happy. Now, I’m content with who I am. Many people I’ve met assumed I was a junkie because of my stuttering. Even my parents didn’t believe that my stutter was unrelated to drugs. So, I tried to prove them wrong and acted as normally as possible to meet their expectations. I went to college, sought friends and a girlfriend despite my stutter, and helped my parents with chores. I tried to be nice, but then I realized I didn’t even know who I was; I was just what they wanted me to be. So, I decided to do the complete opposite. I embraced looking and acting like a ‘freak,’ and surprisingly, it’s been working great so far. I told myself, ‘Hey buddy, we’re all going to die, so you might as well live a life you deserve.’ I dropped out of college, cut ties with my parents and friends, and moved to another country. It hasn’t cured my speech impediment, but I no longer cling to people and instead focus on my own hobbies and life goals, which don’t involve others. Also, a medication called ‘Olanzapine’ has helped me tremendously, but it has many side effects, so please be cautious."
