I do this quite often (only around people I'm not so comfortable with) and I absolutely hate it. I'm sure people just assume I'm a twit. I struggled for a long while to say the word dishwasher during a conversation with a new roommate, and unfortunately she came from Thailand with not-so-good english so I had to hum and haw while I 'thought' of the word.
