I'm an SLP specializing in stuttering, so to answer some of the more logistical questions... 1. Private speech therapy is very expensive. Depending on where you live, it will likely cost between $75-$150 for a 1-hour session. University clinics may be cheaper (my grad school clinic charged $75/session). 2. Most of us private practice SLPs don't take insurance because it is a pain in the behind and reimbursement is terrible. Me personally, I accept BlueCross BlueShield only, because they pay decently. Large private practices with multiple SLPs are more likely to take a variety of insurances. 3. Even if your SLP DOES take insurance, many, many plans will not cover speech therapy for stuttering. Speech therapy is usually "diagnosis driven", which means your coverage approval depends on WHY you need therapy. For example, many plans will cover speech therapy ONLY if it is needed because of a stroke, accident, or surgery. (This means, if you call your insurance to check if speech therapy is covered, you need to say "Is it covered for STUTTERING".)
