As someone who has a hard time making new friends, I can relate wholeheartedly. With stuttering, the fear of rejection is so harsh that putting your authentic self out there (which is kind of a requisite to making friends) is difficult and does not come naturally to a lot of us. If you don't put out this vibe of authenticity, social charisma, confidence, self-love, then people aren't as likely to want to keep interacting with you. Your SLP is only partially correct...stuttering in and of itself does not deter you from making friends, but how well you navigate social environments and how authentic you show up. If you've ever met PWS stutter with low levels of social anxiety, it will not surprise you why theyre able to make friends easily. Even when they stutter, they don't give off this vibe that they dislike themselves because of it.
