I don't think we can rely on how society views stuttering to be reliable. If we take that to be the standard then our stuttering is the result of some internal psychological conflict, the result of some traumatic event, or general nervousness. But empirically, we know this is not the case. And furthermore, any one person's views and beliefs about stuttering have no impact whatsoever on my ability to speak (fluently or not). Thus, I think you're getting at is how we interpret reactions to our stuttering impacts how we view stuttering and communication in general. I can get behind that idea.
