Something weird I've noticed First of all I'd like to say hello to everybody here. It's nice to find encouraging place with people who share same problems as you do. I am 20 years old and I've been stuttering my whole life, or at least for as long as I can remember. It was never huge but it still made me antisocial and very doubtful in myself since through my whole life there would always be people, mostly kids, who'd make fun of it and make me feel less worthy. But I guess that's something all of us here are familiar with. What I've noticed recently, mostly since I left for college, is that I can talk much more freely around unknown people rather than my family and close friends. For example, if I talk to my girlfriend or parents I have problems speaking but if I meet new people I will almost always start speaking much more fluent. Few months ago, I've noticed this girl in my class and decided to approach her and start a conversation. We've talked for almost 15 minutes and I didn't stutter even once. Or one time I went to college meeting where there was about 20 or so people who I've never met in person before. It was first time in my life when I actually stood up in front of bunch of strangers who had no idea that I stutter and had to introduce myself. And I was speaking 99% fluent. On words that I usually know I am gonna stutter I will start thinking "here it goess" but I decide to give it a shot and succeed on first try. Of course, I still have to avoid certain words but in much less consinstency than with people who are closer to me. Feeling of fluent talk I have with those people usually keeps on for few days and during that time I can speak more fluent with others as well. It might be the fact that those people don't know about it so I can be sure they don't expect me to stutter and for that short amount of time during our conversation I can put my sutter behind me and enjoy in conversation. It feels so liberating. But still there are times where I'd get very nervous and my stutter gets about 10 times worse. Beats me. Has anyone ever had similiar experiences?
