How do I overcome the fear that my niece will stutter? My dad had a stutter for a short while when he was a kid. He overcame it and never told me. My mom showed me a note from his teacher in the attic one day when I was in college I believe. It was a note to his mom expressing concern about his stutter. That’s how I found out. I have stuttered since I was 9 years old. I’ve heard people tell me it is genetic so you can only get it if your parents or someone in your family had it. Usually guys get it but obviously that only held true for my dad. My sister is due to have her little girl in December. We are not too close at all but regardless I constantly have nightmares of my little niece walking up to me years from now and say, “Yyyyyou ddddd.....did this to mmmmmmmeee.” My sister has always been embarrassed of me when I speak and once told me she was ashamed of me because of my stutter. I guess that may be why we don’t talk much. What chance is there that my niece will grow up and never have to worry about her stutter.
