I was doing what you are telling, but actually diaphragm breathing has helped me gain some fluency. Breathing with chest makes my muscles more tense and makes me feel out of breath, which increased my anxiety and nervousness. Its good it helped you. Everyone is different, different body and different type of stutter, maybe this might work for some.
