Advice for our child who stutters My son is 3 1/2. He began speaking much later than his older sister did (around 2). He went through a brief spell of stuttering about a year ago and then it seemed to go away for a while. Now, it is back in a big way. Very rarely can he speak a sentence clearly on the first try. He even gets "hung" when answering 'yes' or 'no' to a question. I can see from his facial expression that he is really struggling to get the words out, or say them in a way that he is happy with. Sometimes he will pronounce the word/words correctly after several attempts but continue to try at the word rather than proceeding with the sentence. Recently, he's began saying "ah man, I can't say it" and just giving up on talking. This part breaks my heart. We have an appointment for him to meet with a speech therapist, and I'm sure we'll learn more about the condition and severity then, but I just wanted to ask those of you who experience this, what could we as parents do to help our son when he is clearly frustrated? I try to never rush him, tell him to slow down, finish his sentences, or even acknowledge that he is having such a hard time. Any advice?
