My original strategy was avoidance behavior - which lead me to become a walking thesaurus. It worked, but I would sometimes sound like I was talking gibberish with all my big fancy words. After that, I did a “pigeon logic” approach. I would do breathing and tongue manipulations to “prime” me for fluency. All this created was ever-increasing rituals, that would fail, because my stutter is a motherf#cker and likes to morph and make me struggle with sounds I already “mastered.” My entire stutter has changed from blocks to bouncing in my later years for some reason. I still struggle on certain words… But I try not to beat myself up about it anymore. I also do fluency enhancing strategies now. Drop the drill sergeant forced projection style of speaking, speak slower, practice on passing air past my vocal folds before speaking, and work on light articulation of my tongue and lips. My advice - Start doing mindful fluency practice with random words. When that feels good, expand the words to the most common short phrases. When that feels good, practice with a partner. When that feels good, practice with a stranger. When that feels good practice with a partner on the phone… Then a stranger on the phone… Then a group of friends… Then a group of strangers… Then make a formal presentation to the FBI or the Department of Defense… Then do it on camera in front of judgmental boomers… Then do it on camera in front of a lion… Then a pride of lions… I think you get what I’m saying.
