What is the best neuroscience research on stuttering?

What is the best neuroscience research on stuttering? To me the worst part of stuttering is the lack of understanding as to what it is. The inconsistency. How sometimes we are near fluent, and other times trying to speak at all is a struggle, and while we have periods of fluency, in the back of our heads we are dreading knowing it won't last and we don't understand why any of it is happening. I feel like if only we could pinpoint through science what stuttering specifically is, or rather what the different types of stuttering specifically are, we could fight it better. Is there any serious research being put into stuttering to finding out what specifically can cause people to be "stutterers" and finding possible cures? Or are we such a small minority of the population no one cares enough to put funding into it?
