I work in a call center, and I go back and forth all the time. Some days I have no issue speaking fluently, others I struggle with every other word. Realistically, I know that 99% of the people on the other line don't give a shit, but I've always felt embarrassed and self-conscious whenever it happens. But I'm glad you were able to get out of there (that is, if you wanted to leave).
