I'm a public high school teacher with 15ish years experience. Every year, the first two things out of my mouth are my name and the fact that I stutter. I then spend about 10 minutes talking about it, and telling the kids how they should react when I get stuck. I think this is important, because it immediately creates the expectation that this isn't going to be a big deal and that we're all in this together. Life then proceeds as normal. Students quickly adapt, and many report that they stop noticing it after a few weeks. I've only had a few discipline problems that revolve around my stutter, and a squash them pretty quickly (once again, creating the expectation that this isn't a big deal). For my part, teaching all day is exhausting, and it is getting more exhausting as a I get older. For a number of reasons (stuttering being in the top 5), I'm beginning to wonder if I'll be able to sustain another 20-25 years in this profession. This is something that I never considered until a couple of years ago.
