My Dad, Brother & i all stutters, while my youngest brother has Schizophrenia * I think there is a link * Thinking about using Anti-Psychotic Medication / Drugs to treat my stutter i have 2 younger brothers, 1 stutters like me, while the other who never stuttered in his life is now diagnosed with Schizophrenia. To help understand Schizophrenia, i researched online and stumbled upon a ton of information linking both disorders. Apparently, both stutter and Schiz are neurological disorders and since my dad's side carry the Stutter genes thats been passed down (i know it sucks), i feel there is a real link here and i simply want to pass information along to my fellow stutterers are are also looking for cures and understanding of our condition. I found an old post on Reddit 2 years ago by skruppy3030, so i wanted to reopen this thread about treating my stutter with anti-psychotic drugs. I know its sounds crazy, but when you are in your late 30's, and communication affects all aspects of your life from your career to your social life, im at the end of my rope. Please, i dont need the heart felt sympathy speech about loving myself for who i am blah blah blah. i consider myself a realist and we all know just to open our mouth and utter 1 freaking syllable is like pulling teeth. Please let me know your thoughts! Abilify really helped my stutter (self.Stutter) submitted 2 years ago by skruppy3030 After trying every sort of speech therapy known to man I finally resorted to drugs. Luckily the shrink at the local free clinic was very understanding of my stuttering problem and the emotional issues it can cause. She was happy to prescribe me some drugs I did some research on. Currently I'm taking Abilify which is meant for a bunch of other problems, but was also shown to have helped in matters of stuttering. I thought it was worth a shot. So far I've been on it a few months and my stuttering seems to be progressively getting better. For instance I used to dread going to the grocery stores that ask if you want a paper or plastic bag. I'd always get caught on trying to say either paper or plastic for a long time. Even though I don't give a flying fuck what kind of bag my groceries are in. Anyway, now I have no problem simply saying, "plastic."
