Does anyone else feel a need to swallow in nervous situations? I've noticed that sometimes, when I'm faced with an uncomfortable "challenge" of some kind, like when someone says something to me that I can tell was meant to be offensive, or when I realize I'm gonna have to speak up about something controversial, when I get (a particular kind of) angry about something, etc, I feel an urge to swallow that will simply not go away until I do. It's just like in cartoons, when a character realizes something bad and swallows in a big GULP, though obviously not as exaggerated. Since this is another nervous/anxiety thing that manifests itself in the throat area, I was wondering if it was at all common amongst stutterers. So please, if you reply, please include what you believe to be the level of severity of your stutter and, if it's not too much, the age at which you believe you started stuttering. I'd like to see if there are any correlations.
