Even if it's the point of the book to show us what is acceptable, it still needs to do so in a way that is consistent with it's message. It would be okay for Monty to be uncomfortable with the awkwardness that Julio's stuttering creates. This is a feature of stuttering many (every) stutterer will encounter. Thus, Monty likes Julio despite the fact that Julio's stuttering makes Monty feel uncomfortable.
