Yes. I've been in that precise situation recently with a covert stutterer who couldn't hide it successfully. There was a wonderful "one of us" moment and that was about it. He seemed relieved. However the stutterer during the second conversation, that is the second time we met, was even more covert the second go around which was sad. I figured he'd be at ease around me but that wasn't the case. The lesson being you can't really predict how a stutterer will feel about their stutter, just do your best and if you want to have a "hello, I stutter" type conversation then do so but realize you can't control how they feel about their own stutter.
