"Fear excecurbates stuttering"Myth or fact? I think we can all agree that some people become (more) fluent when they are scared or angry, while others stutter (more) in those states. Rather than viewing this as “fear exacerbates stuttering,” it’s likely more accurate to say our subconscious reacts to “something” (without our choosing) at the level of conditioning: if the mind or brain treats this “something” as an error, it shifts into avoidance or an autonomic threat response (sympathetic nervous system). Now the question is: what effectively extinguishes such conditioning / de-conditioning? (This may differ for each person.) Some people speak (more) fluently when using a fake accent or voice, while others speak more fluently using their real voice — e.g., because they may feel more authentic when expressing their true self — which is linked to how the brain is conditioned to evaluate and react to these unconscious cues.
