Congrats on your speech therapy success. I am 39 and i have what i rate as a mild to severe stutter. I would say its def more severe around people of authority and when i want to talk about something i'm passionate about and trying to persuade or inform others on a topic. I can remember my speech going back to 5th grade and some emotional trauma i experienced as a child. I personally think in my situation my stutter is related to self confidence. This explains why when i have a few drinks or in my younger days rec drugs that my confidence and esteem goes up which directly lessens (does not fully take away) my stutter. I don't condone or suggest others to try that route because for some it might lead to lifelong dependencies. Why am i saying this on your post? well, i feel after reading your post that maybe the therapy was in a safe space around others which you let your guard down and accepted it because you were feel from judgement and ridicule. When we move into the real-world, we are surrounded by unknowns and our experiences have trained us that people do not like what they don't understand and there for make fun of it or avoid it which in turn hurts our self confidence and esteem and that returns a vicious loop and the stutter gets worse and worst. Surround yourself with people you wish to be like and wish to become and read outloud everything you can get your hands on. Limit the number of times your brain hears you stutter, make it hear fluent speech only. read books and record yourself and play it at night when your subconscious is most susceptible to change. Stop yourself from stuttering. When you feel like you might... STOP. period. sometimes just walk away. it feels rude sometimes but you have to do what you can. as a person that has stuttered most of their life, we all learn crutches. learn a few, swap them out in certain situations and focus on only allowing your brain to hear fluent speech. Its easier said than done... some days are easy, while others are impossible. the more confidence you have in your self, the more easier days will come. i truly wish you the best and if you want to know some books on the suggestions i provided above, please let me know. just my .02 cents.
