Hi /Stutter, I am a 3rd year University student, looking at the effects of alcohol on stuttering and thought some of you could offer up honest opinions? Hi, now this is in the early stages of development, and nothing has been finalised yet, as I wanted to get the opinions of the people who would be (in theory) taking part in my study. It aims to look at how alcohol effects a stutter, after reading around on various message boards, I have seen that there are a few different ways in which alcohol can effect a persons stutter the main two being, either it doesnt help at all and sometimes makes it worse, the other being the opposite and it helps the person while drinking but can, the morning after or longer have detrimental effects. What sparked my curiosity for this was, I work in a nightclub part time, and one night a guy came up who had a fairly bad stutter, I didnt think anything of it at the time, but when he came to me later on in the night it had gone, he spoke to me more openly as well (Not just "can i have X") but asked how my night was and went on his way, now there were still elements of his stutter, but nothing as bad as it had previously been. so that is where the idea came from. Now i know there are a couple of ethical issues, one of which is alcohol dependence, but these are things that can be worked out along the way. My idea is, to have three separate passages of text, ask them to read one before drinking, during and then the morning after, to see how their language changes (as side from the general alcohol effects, such as slurring of speech.) My plan is to try and identify different kinds of stutters, for example. If someone can speak fine when drunk, it leads me to believe their stutter could be more social anxiety based, where as if they show no improvement, then it is something deeper rooted (this is obviously a very brief and simple explanation) Any thoughts or any points to further clear up/think about would be hugely appreciated. Thank you very much TL:DR I want to run a case study on the effects of alcohol on a stutter and wanted to run it passed this community first to avoid/change anything and get some honest opinions. Edit: Thanks a lot guys, you've given me hope that this can work. Big thanks to everyone that said they would take part in it study, depending on how i go with it that could actually be an option.
