Is fluency the goal in your own stutter experience? I think we can all agree that many people who stutter use synonyms, swap words, alter volume, pitch or accent, or change the speech plan in one or other ways (for example, by adjusting breathing). One reason for these changes is to become more fluent or at the very least, they are often used to help or support continue the speech plan. From that perspective, fluency is at least, one of the goals—or at least a common—goal for many. Other goals can include not caring about others’ judgments, acceptance, speaking comfortably, and managing communicative variability or diversity. To send a message we must move the speech plan forward. Even people who stutter do not remain stuck on the same word for hours, days, or weeks; eventually they either continue with the planned speech plan or modify it. Whatever strategy is used—active or passive—some action is taken to keep the speech plan progressing. This means that fluency, at bare minimum, is one of the objectives for many people who stutter Your thoughts?
