Sorry for reposting what i just wrote but this answers your question: I am very much part of the #ok2stutter movement, born out of the social model of disability, that does not look at a person as being disabled but rather at society as being disabling. I do a lot to raise awareness of the condition and work hard at dispelling myths (right here for example) and boosting confidence. I personallythink that what gay pride was in the 80s and 90s, stuttering pride will be in the 2020s. But we are not there yet. There are many effective techniques to control stammering so I offer my patients a mixture of learning fluency techniques and CBT, to help them overcome any negative thoughts and feelings around their stammer. That combination actually works really well. They stutter less while at the same time caring less if they do.
