Correct. And is not just dopamine. It’s a fine balance between all the neurotransmitters involved in the fine tuning of the speech motor neural networks. Dopamine is just one piece of the puzzle, but it has been found from fMRI and PET brain scans that a dysregulated, hyperactive dopaminergic baseline is common in the stuttering brain compared to a “fluent brain”. That’s why certain dopamine antagonist psychotic meds which block (or regulate) dopamine at the D2 receptors actually improves fluency for those stutterers with an overactive dopaminergic baseline in the basal ganglia/Brocas Area/Striatum (all these areas area involved in speech production).
