The program is based on 'costal breathing' which is one kind of the basic functions for this to work. While training your costal breathing, you're also learning to stutter on command. By doing that, you are taking the power back - while your stutter usually controls you, you learn to control your stutter. This can be quite hard, and a bit transgressive. But by doing that, you are sort of embracing the fact that you stutter, which leads to a lot less tension while speaking which in turn leads to a lot less un-controlled stuttering. But! It's a long way, and as you already know, there is no easy fix. Besides the course itself, you also become part of a local support group which is a big help! This makes you much more comfortable, and a lot more used to stuttering on commando. It's been a while since I've been to one, but I'm planning on going as I haven't been "doing my homework" lately, and as a result it has influenced my stutter, but I'm working on it and already seeing improvements. If you have any more questions feel free to ask in comments, so that everyone can get the info, although I'm probably going to be without internet for the next couple of days. Hope this answered some of your questions. Edit: [here's a different thread about the programme](https://www.reddit.com/r/Stutter/comments/42o20v/people_who_have_tried_the_mcguire_programme_how/?)
