I think this is an excellent summary of the contributions to this thread. There are many never-helpers, a couple of always-helpers, and several who are nuanced relationship-specific-helpers and situation-specific-helpers. I don't know for sure what I will do the next time I find myself talking with a stutterer, but I will definitely remember that some people are highly offended when people finish their words for them.
